Access to Justice (A2Justice) welcomes reforms to procedures and
guidelines for appointing superior court Judges in Nigeria made
by the National Judicial Council (NJC) recently. The reforms seek
to plug serious lapses in the former judicial
appointments/elevation guidelines that made those guidelines too
feeble and ineffective in achieving its aims.
We are recruiting to fill the position of:
Job Title: Legal Counsel
Location: Lagos
Job Description
- The Organization is seeking an exceptional candidate to
fill an existing vacancy for the under-listed position. The
position is based in the organization’s office in Lagos.
- Counsel in its Legal Access Programme.
Core Skills and Responsibilities
- The candidate should be able to, and have a hands-on
experience in conducting litigation in trial and appellate
courts.
- In addition to practicing law and litigating cases in a
variety of practice areas, s/he must have particularly
conducted litigation to enforce fundamental rights and have
strong knowledge of procedural rules for remedying
infringements of human rights.
- Be very knowledgeable in international and regional human
rights law and how they apply to Nigeria.
- Possess extraordinary strategic forensic skills, and be
adept in using a variety of available and strategic procedures
to advance client’s causes.
- He or she must demonstrate strong advocacy/litigation
skills and must have practiced before the High courts National
Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal.
- S/he will provide legal advisory services to clients,
prepare depositions of both expert and other witnesses, and
argue applications.
Requirements
- 1st Degree in Law, Must also be called to the Nigerian Bar;
- NYSC certificate or a certificate of waiver.
- Ability to work with very minimal or no supervision.
- Able to meet set targets under pressure.
- At least five (4) years post call experience is essential.
- Must have excellent research, drafting, writing and
communication skills.
- Ability to lead a litigation team.
Remuneration
N1, 080,000 per annum (additional remuneration is contingent on
specific outcomes which will be discussed with the candidate).
