Job Title: Consultants

Job Location: Abuja

Background

Recurring violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt has consistently undermined the region’s development. Conflict between pastoralists and farmers in the region has increasingly taken on religious overtones as Christian farmers clash with Muslim pastoralists over scarce natural resources.    With funding from GHR, The Inter-Religious Peace-building in Northern Nigeria (IPNN) project is strategically building on a three-year DFID-funded program, titled, CONCUR, that aims to resolve pastoralist/farmer conflict in Northern (Plateau State), with an emphasis on conflicts that cross religious lines and negatively affect local livelihoods and economic growth.    Our program addresses underlying drivers of community conflict by preventing the escalation of ethno-religious violence and creating incentives for government, the private sector and community members to work proactively to promote stability using religious leaders.    The importance of improved sustainability of dispute resolution through the religious leaders who are seen as role models cannot be over emphasized. In order to support the sustainability of dispute resolution agreements and prevent the emergence of new conflicts, Religious leaders with inputs from their community will identify and implement various activities that will address the underlying conflict systems.

Purpose / Project Descriptions

Mercy Corps and partners Pastoral Resolve (PARE) are preparing to reinforce practical cooperation on development issues through interfaith community dialogues and radio broadcasts where peace messages are generated as part of the peace building activity. Religious leaders and Traditional leader will come together to identify messages of tolerance that are common to each faith and then engage in a series of radio broadcasts and inter-faith dialogue amongst the communities in dispute.
These messages are meant to draw clear lines between religion and the underlying economic causes of the dispute, and to strengthen tolerance and trust between conflicting groups.
This activity will be replicated, as an increased number of inter-faith conversations and messages will bring about greater levels of trust and interaction amongst the farmers and pastoralists in the Northern Nigeria.
In the Middle Belt of Nigeria, messages will be recorded from approximately 50 religious leaders and additional local leaders.

Consultancy Objectives

The purpose of these services is to take clear records of peace messages that will be generated by the selected religious leaders, with the aim of increasing trust and tolerance amongst the pastoralists/farmers’ conflict that has taken a religious dimension.    This project aims to reduce resource competition, increase economic opportunity, and promote peace and cooperation between the pastoralist and the farming communities. Mercy Corps and PARE will be responsible for selecting the community leaders of both the pastoralist and the farming communities.    The consultant will be responsible for recording these messages, editing and cleaning the recordings, and providing a qualitative copy to Mercy Corps.
