Contextual Background



  • The IRC has been present in Nigeria since 2012 when the organization responded to flooding in Kogi state. In February 2014 the IRC moved into Adamawa State in NE Nigeria to provide humanitarian interventions through a multi-sectoral, integrated approach for conflict affected populations. IRC Nigeria now operates a country office in Abuja and field offices in Mubi and Yola of Adamawa State, Maiduguri and Monguno of Borno state and Damatru of Yobe State. Currently, IRC Nigeria implements programs primary health care, nutrition, environmental health, women’s protection and empowerment, protection, child protection, education, food security & livelihoods


Job Overview/Summary



  • The Nutrition Outreach Nurse shall support the Nutrition Officer in the  the implementation of daily nutrition activities and implementation of CMAM program in MMC and Jere LGAs in line with National Guidelines and improving maternal and child health and nutrition, promoting appropriate IYCN practices and hygiene and sanitation.

  • The post holder will work in close collaboration with the government staff, the community and those of the local Partners in implementing the nutrition program..


Major Responsibilities
Program Management, Technical Quality, and Strategy:



  • The nutrition outreach Nurse will work together with the nutrition officer and other IRC sectors in implementing CMAM, outreach program and MIYCN activities in MMC and Jere .He/she will Work together with the health facility staff in developing the movement and work plans for the respective health facilities.

  • Work with MOH staff in conducting outreach especially in hard to reach areas where security situation permits

  • Formation, training and supervising the community Health Volunteers to carry out routine MUAC screening at community level and work closely with other outreach staff in screening of SAM children at the OTP sites and facilitate referral of sick children to the stabilization centre.

  • Identification and training of the community in active case finding, referral and defaulter tracing at community level.

  • To ensure that program are implemented in accordance with IRC policies and procedures.

  • Ensure all criteria are respected and understood by the teams, including admission, discharge and transfer to and from the OTP/Stabilization centre

  • Ensure comprehensive health checks and treatment according to the protocols

  • Review the forms completed by staff to ensure completion, accuracy and coherence

  • Ensure adequate availability of all medical and therapeutic supplies and ensure stock is pre-positioned as planned by discussing with supply chain

  • Follow-up and provide feedback to the Nutrition manager on the amount and quality of the treatment supplies if it does not comply with specified quality standards.

  • Follow and respect the current protocols specially drug administration i.e. for de-worming, malaria, polio and measles , and micronutrient mineral/ Vitamin A supplements targeting children and PLW

  • Add the activities linked to health and nutrition education in the protocols

  • Follow the treatment of the beneficiaries during visits at home

  • Participate in the follow-up of orders and consumption

  • To carry-out any other duties and/or responsibilities assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Program Development:



  • Together with the nutrition manager support in the development of an effective outreach strategy that will enhance effective and comprehensive service provision.

  • Capacity building and training of the local government and partner staff in all aspects of nutrition programming.

  • Review the forms completed by staff to ensure completion, accuracy and coherence

  • Ensure adequate availability of all medical and therapeutic supplies and ensure stock is pre-positioned as planned by discussing with supply chain

  • Follow-up and provide feedback to the Nutrition manager on the amount and quality of the treatment supplies if it does not comply with specified quality standards.

  • Report on progress and any problems in a timely manner

  • Ensure cases not meeting admission criteria return home as early as possible and understand why their child is not admitted

  • Through liaison with the community mobilizers and nutrition volunteers, provide effective follow up of all cases: particularly tracing of children who are absent from the programme, sick children, long stay children, children not gaining weight, and children with social problems etc.

  • Provide key health and education messages to beneficiaries based the protocol and guidelines

  • Respond to inquiries regarding the technical aspects of the program admission and discharge whenever necessary at the OTP sites.

  • Follow-up and ensure the field team interacts with the beneficiaries properly.


Research, Learning and Analysis:



  • Analyze the nutritional situation

  • Compile the statistical data (admission, default, cured, absent, death) and draft a report on activities.


Coordination & Representation:



  • Establish good relationship with the Buluma’sand LGA authorities and community leaders

  • Establish a network with the other actors in the working area (I/NGO)

  • Establish a good understanding of the program within the community

  • Establish link and meetings with the community leaders and different group existing in the working area.

Requirements/Qualifications



  • Diploma in Nursing and must be registered with Nursing Board.


Work Experience:



  • Experience in Conducting outreach and Mobile clinics

  • Previous experience in implementing a nutrition program.

  • Previous experience in nutrition surveys and added advantage


Demonstrated Technical Skills:



  • Addition nutrition training in CMAM and IYCF is an added advantage


Languages:



  • Hausa and knowledge of Kanuri is an added advantage.


Computer/Other Tech Requirements:



  • Full professional competency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint and CMAM report.
