The African Union Commission (AUC) has announced a
call for proposals for research focusing on the following science and technology strategic priority actions: (a) Post-harvest and Agriculture, (b) Renewable and Sustainable Energy, and (c) Water and Sanitation in Africa. These thematic priorities articulated have been articulated in Africa’s Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action (CPA) and its Lighthouse Projects.Though there are research activities conducted at national and international level by African researchers, it is essential to ensure coordination and integration of efforts while strengthening and supporting these research efforts. Otherwise Africa ends up with “White Elephant” research for the sake of research. The African people and nations deserve better. In this regard, Africa’s Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action (CPA) implementation strategy needs better participation and involvement of African Scientists and Institutions in the CPA implementation efforts in order to make meaningful progress that improve the lives of African citizens. The research grant programme was established by the African Union Commission (AUC) to promote research activities in science and technology in Africa and ensure that such research contributes to sustainable development in Africa. Research must focus on priorities in areas of significant impact. Without effective research and application of science and technology in Africa, it will be impossible to improve? the quality of life of African citizens. And overall prosperity is reduced to mere “idle talk”. Science and Technology is in fact a critical requirement if Africa is to make meaningful impact on the global stage. The AU research grants programme initiative operates through of a special Department of Human Resources, Science and Technology? setup by the AUC to achieve these strategic objectives. The programme is financed through the Financing Agreement between the European Commission and the ACP Group of States under the ACP Research for Sustainable Development Program of the 10th EDF Intra-ACP Envelop.According to the release, the AUC – Human Resources Science and Technology (HRST) Department “will be responsible to structure and implement the whole research selection process (identification, evaluation, contracting and monitoring) during the three year project. This experience will allow HRST Dpt accumulating the necessary knowledge asset to be further developed in a future African research framework programme”.All efforts that genuinely support the true independence of African nations should be commended and encouraged.
